Breaking down the Eugenio Suárez trade

07/31/2025

Last night, the Diamondbacks star third baseman Eugenio Suárez got traded to the Seattle Mariners. The trade itself was not surprising, as everybody and their mother knew that Suárez was getting traded. But, getting traded back to the Mariners was a shock to some. Many thought that perhaps Suárez would get traded to the Cubs, Yankees, or Tigers instead. But regardless of the speculation, he did in fact get traded to the Mariners, and that is precisely what we are here to talk about today. We're going to discuss this trade, as well as how playing in the Mariners ballpark and just how this new team will affect his play for the last 50 games of the year.

So far this season with the Diamondbacks, Suárez has posted a .248/.320/.576 batting splits with 36 home runs and 87 RBIs. What's odd about his batting this season is that he has 36 homers and only 96 total hits. That means that nearly 38% of all of Suárez's hits this season have been home runs. I checked the other players at the top of the home runs leaderboard, and Suárez ranks second in Hits/HR%, just behind Cal Raleigh who sits at 40%. As you can tell by his batting average, Suárez is primarily a power hitter, and will pair up very nicely alongside the best pure power hitter in the MLB, the Big Dumper himself.

Moving into the next topic, this trade was a huge win for the Mariners. They did have to give up their number 9, 16, and 17 prospects to get Suárez, but that definitely evens out when you consider the extra power they now get in the lineup. Also, they get a much needed improvement at the third base position, as their current third basemen, Ben Williamson, just wasn't getting it done for them. He was only batting .253 with just one home run on the year and even recently he just hasn't been performing with just a .143 average in his last seven games. The Mariners currently are five games back of the Houston Astros for the AL West, but they are comfortably in the Wild Card, as they sit 2.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians and are tied with the Rangers for those last two spots. This trade for Suárez is a big help for the playoff push that they want come October.

Overall, Suárez's numbers will most likely stay the same on the Mariners. If anything, you may see a slight decrease in his home runs just because T-Mobile Park is the most pitcher-friendly ballpark in the MLB, but that hasn't seemed to affect Cal Raleigh's numbers at all this season as he is having a historic year. So expect Suárez to continue having his career season that he is having, and don't be surprised if you see him hitting home runs in October this season, and next year if he resigns with the Mariners.
