How will the Rafael Devers trade affect fantasy baseball?

06/18/2025

Earlier today, the baseball world was shocked. Rafael Devers was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the San Francisco for Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, James Tibbs III, and Jose Bello. Overall, the Giants fleeced the Red Sox here as they got a three time All Star and a two time Silver Slugger for practically nothing. In today's article, we are going to be breaking down the trade for the Red Sox and how it will affect fantasy baseball moving forward.

So far this season with the Red Sox, he is batting .271/.400/.494 for an OPS of .894. He has hit 14 home runs, 57 RBIs, and 18 doubles while appearing in every game for the Red Sox. You may forget, but Devers started the season in a terrible slump and batted sub-.200 for the first couple weeks of the season. After that terribly slow start, he has picked it back up tremendously and may even be in the running for another All Star selection to his resume.

This trade came as a shock to all baseball fans, but most importantly Red Sox fans. Rafael Devers has spent his entire nine year professional career with the Red Sox, and every fan can count on him to bat .270 and hit 25 home runs every single season. Maybe because of the early struggles that the Red Sox have had this season, they thought that it was time to move on from their franchise player? This trade still makes zero sense to me, especially after this past offseason and also what they got in this trade. The Red Sox seemed to be in win-now mode after this past offseason, in which they got Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman, which is why trading Devers makes no sense. Also, they didn't get any star players in return and only prospects, which just makes it all the more confusing. Overall, I would give this trade a D- for the Red Sox and a A+ for the Giants.

Now, how will this trade affect fantasy baseball going forward? Devers has had an above average season for him, and will likely continue if not improve with the Giants. As for the other pieces in this trade, none of them will affect any fantasy baseball whatsoever, so we don't even need to discuss them. The main discussion with Devers is which position he will play for San Francisco. He already said in his press conference that he will play whatever position the Giants want him to play, which is great for fantasy managers because this now entails a variety of selections for us. For instance, if we already are starting Shohei Ohtani at our DH, we can simply place Devers at third base.

Overall, this was just a downright disgusting act from the Red Sox, and may become one of the worst trades in MLB history. But the bright side of this entire situation is that fantasy managers get another position to possibly start Rafael Devers at. The Giants have also just moved themselves from Wild Card exits to now championship contenders. Also on a side note, I am very sorry for not posting this past week, and we will get back to it right away.
